Mobile Users

Post by Altuslumen »

I installed a new template and a mod this morning from:
http://code.google.com/p/phpbb-iphone-style/
I have 0.8 with modifications currently installed.

It will auto detect if you are using a mobile browser and switch you to the iphone style. Please let me know if you have any problems with the template (even if you are using it from a non-mobile device). I'm hoping this provides an easier reading experience on phones.

I've tested it some and can confirm at least for the iPhone's Safari browser it auto-detects properly.

To disable the mobile style automatically switching when on a mobile device to go
http://www.sheffieldfamily.net/user-data.php
uncheck the checkbox at the bottom and then click Update Data.

I have a Palm Pro, and it was a very basic white background with plain links, but no indication of where the new posts are. Perhaps my phone is just old?

I had a red colored icon for new posts, just have to hit the 'Forums' link first. If it isn't working though I should be able to disable the auto-style change for palm devices.

Reply button is at the top of the page, it is kind of annoying, but it lives up there (at least for now).

Added a reply button at the bottom of each post (easy than repeating the top bar at the bottom). Next, I need to look into adding the server status on the mobile version. I also want to figure out a why to disable to style change, though I have very little clue on how to even begin right now.

Added the server status to
http://www.sheffieldfamily.net/forums/#_forums
It will only show up on the forum list page at the bottom. It won't show up on every page like it does for the CA Black style (more so a limitation of the style than a choice on my part).

If there are adjustments that would make this easier to use let me know and I'll see what I can add in. So far I've changed the button on the 'Forums' page to take you back to the starting page and added a reply button on each post.

I think overall it looks great. The only suggestion I might add at this point is a way to return to the top or return to the board index at the bottom of a forum. When I scroll to the bottom of the posts to read the most current addition, I have to scroll all the way back to the top to return back to the previous screen or hit the back button on the phone.

I appreciate you taking the time to make the changes. It's made browsing the website from the phone a lot easier for me anyway.

UPDATES

  • Added Board (index with the general links) and Forum (forums index) to the top and bottom of every topic.

  • Added a Top button at the bottom of very topic (I tried adding a bottom button but it didn't work at all, there is some strange code running).

  • On a new post or reply I added a button to go back to the forum.

  • On the board index list there is a link to the User Control Panel, don't use it if you don't have to, after a save it could error out. The iphone style doesn't support the UCP so I change the style to CA Black but when saving the 'style=8' parameter can get lost. I mainly added it because if you change your style to iphone you have no way to change it to something else.

  • When posting a reply the label won't be on top of the subject box.

  • If you aren't logged in it will default to CA Black instead of iphone, you can't register from iphone.

Let me know what else needs to be added/changed or if you run into any problems. Overall, this style is considered still in beta, so the person working on it could change things a lot also.

I added a time stamp at the bottom of the forums page (right below server status). I didn't like that you couldn't tell for sure if you were viewing cache or an updated page.
